How to Ensure Quality When Buying Diamonds Online

Jul 10, 2017

Know What You’re Looking For

If you have a goal in mind, you won’t risk getting talked into something that’s not really for you. Do plenty of research on the different qualities that make a diamond great, if you don’t already know. Understand that carat is a weight or density measurement of the stone, which helps determine the quality. Take note that different diamonds have different color grades, and some are purer than others. What’s the clarity? Is the cut in a style that you like? These are all basic considerations you need to make in knowing whether a purchase is to your liking or not.

Is It Verified?

A dealer can give you his word of the stone’s quality, but an official appraiser has the credentials to really qualify it. Look for a report check along with the stone purchase, and let that report speak for the quality of the stone. It can let you know how well the salesman’s claims stand up to the official report, and give you confidence in your purchase.

Laser Inscriptions Mean Security

Is the diamond laser-inscripted? If the answer is no, then that should raise an eyebrow. A tiny set of number should be etched into the diamond on one of its edges, too small to notice on the surface, but clear enough to identify the unique stone and where it comes from. Without a valid inscription number, it could be a sign that this diamond was obtained by questionable means, whether that’s through thievery or through the blood diamond trade. If there’s no inscription, there shouldn’t be a sale either. Check out your local Michigan jewelry store to learn more about their sales policies for yourself.
